“The Tyranny of Distance – A New Zealand Perspective on Innovation”

New Zealand is a small country. Or is it? It has no land borders, is geographically isolated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean with its closest neighbours being New Caledonia, Fiji, Tonga, and Australia, and has a population of less than 5 million. What are the critical challenges for New Zealand and how do those affect innovation and commercialisation programmes and practises in companies and universities, and what role does the government play?

This Friday, MADE Cymru’s innovation management students will be joined by Graham Scown who is live broadcasting all the way from Auckland, New Zealand. Graham is the Director of Scown Strategic, a specialist innovation consultancy based in New Zealand. He’s currently Programme & Commercialisation Director for New Zealand’s premier national research commercialisation programmes, ‘Return On Science’, and ‘Momentum.’ These programmes bring new research to market from universities, research institutions, and private companies by providing a set of professional commercialisation services that draw together high quality resources from around the globe to assist in the commercialisation of research.

Graham has been working in, and on, the New Zealand innovation sector for the past 18 years. He began his journey by starting a technology company straight out of university, based on a final year theoretical project.  After starting the company, establishing it, and subsequently selling it, he was able to go back to his course lecturer and correct one of his lecturer’s comments on an assessment, which was “nice idea but it will never work commercially”.

Graham is a sought after speaker at national and international events and conferences, and works with governments and corporates to help develop commercialisation and entrepreneurial strategies.
