People who have a responsibility for innovations and/or new product development in the workplace will normally need support from others in the organisation to bring these initiatives to fruition.

That support could involve merely permission, but it could also require financial investment or the switching of support from other projects. It could even challenge conventional wisdom on the current ways of operating. Therefore, these decision makers need to be persuaded and so an ability to influence others, both professionally and ethically, is a core skill for all those involved in projects.

We are thrilled to welcome Andrew Scowcroft as this week’s guest speaker on MADE Cymru’s Innovation Management course (certified by University of Wales Trinity Saint David). Andrew enjoyed a 21-year senior management career within the NHS and, in 1994 persuaded his then bosses to allow him to set up the first self-financing NHS consultancy in the UK.

Andrew founded his own management training consultancy based in South Wales in 2001 – and has since lectured on a range of management subjects at Cardiff University, Cardiff Business School, The University of Gloucestershire and Hereford and now University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

Lecturer Alan Mumby shared an anecdote about Andrew, “On a trip to the USA back in the late nineties Andrew and I were the guests of some friends in Southaven, a small town in Mississippi. One day just as he returned from an early morning walk around a nearby lake, I asked him how he’d enjoyed his walk. He said the walk was fine until he noticed a big snake – ‘A SNAKE !!??’ I screamed, ’what did you do?’ Without matching my own hysteria he said ‘..well from a distance I just gave him a dam good talking to and he went on his way’. The art of persuasion is a gift for some people.”

Andrew’s talk on Tuesday is aptly titled ‘Professional Influencing, a tutorial on Influencing others in the workplace’.
