Lecturer Alan Mumby is looking forward to welcoming long-time friend and former colleague Dr Frank O’Conner as a guest speaker on Friday.

Frank worked with Alan at Design Wales (based in PDR, Cardiff) and was the first ever government sponsored Eco Design Specialist. The impact of the work he undertook had a significant impact on how both individuals and companies could respond to a more considered approach to the design and manufacture of products and services, adopting a more circular based economy approach.

He is an award-winning values-led transdisciplinary thought leader in design for sustainability, circularity and responsibility. With now over 30 years’ experience working across the globe on design, strategy and policy challenges with all types and sizes of organisation and sector. You have to go back to 1989 when Frank first called for a circular economy in Ireland in his seminal publication on material recovery and recycling. He is widely published and has presented his ideas all over the world including to the UK House of Lords, European Commission and United Nations. He has a mixed discipline background which includes a Masters in Advanced Manufacturing, a post-graduate in Management and a PhD in Environmentally Conscious Design.

He is founder/director of anois, a global design agency set up with Jude Sherry. Specialists in helix collaboration, anois take a systems design perspective specialising in ethical branding, sustainable product design, responsible value chains and circular business models, at a product and urban level, while working with intra-government, government, local authorities, business, educators and civil society.

In his lecture, broadcast live from Cork, Frank will introduce circular business models and their implications for international innovation. It will include real-life industry case studies and will explore global trends, risks, regulations and opportunities for companies to innovate in an international market.
